Several major five-star hotels designed to attract China's new upscale travelers are scheduled to open in the city later this year. But the Ritz-Carlton hopes to create a sensation at a site that opened earlier this month. Five-star hotels are opening across China, trying to attract wealthy travelers for both business and leisure, while luxury hotels are based in Shanghai and Beijing. Many of them are now established, but some major hotels, such as Shangri-La and the Mandarin Oriental, have been hastily established in their respective cities.
Hoping to capitalise on the city's historic presence, the hotel, which opened in August, will be one of the many major attractions associated with China's greatest thinkers, according to the Shangri-La website.
The Grand Hyatt Shanghai Hotel, which was the tallest hotel in the world at the time of completion, has a total of 1,000 rooms and 2,500 square metres of office space. It is part of the Lujiazui skyline, seen from the Bund, and adjoins a sister building, Shanghai Park Hyatts, which houses the Shangri-La Hotel Shanghai, a luxury hotel with more than 4,200 rooms. IHG has a record number of hotels under construction in China and the United States, and another 397 are in the pipeline, according to its website (here). It has the second largest hotel portfolio of any hotel company in Asia Pacific, behind Hong Kong's Hilton Hotel Group, with over 3,300 rooms, "IG's website says.
It currently has seven brands operating in the Greater China region, including the Grand Hyatt, Shangri-La Hotel, Grand Hotel Shanghai, Hyatts in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong. The company also sees opportunities for its Park Hyatt brand and has opened the Park Hyatt Shenzhen in the southern city of Guangzhou, the first of its kind in China. It is currently being accompanied by a five-star luxury hotel, which is due to open at the end of the year.
It will take the top part, which will include a 1,500-room hotel, a 2,000-bedroom hotel in Hangzhou and a luxury-brand residence project. It is inhabited by the Hyatt Hotel Guangzhou, the first of its kind in China, as well as the second largest luxury hotel in the country.
Grand Hyatt Kunming will be a 1,500-room hotel, a 2,000-bedroom hotel in Hangzhou, and a luxury hotel with a brand-name residence project that will consist of a 3,800-square-foot hotel and 1.5 million square feet of office space, as well as a 4,200-seat hotel.
The joint venture is expected to unveil the hotel in the first quarter of 2017, with a completion date of late 2018 or early 2019. In China, HyATT is focusing on the luxury segment, as Hurun's Chinese Luxury Traveller 2017 found that more people in their 20s, 30s and 40s are willing to spend more on quality accommodations. Compared to a decade ago, spending on travel in hotels and first class has increased significantly.
